1. Archiving Files

1. Archiving Files

1.1. How do I archive files (copy them to another system)?

You have access to a mass storage system called hsm.uky.edu. To use it, you will have to set up an account. Information on how to use it is is available here .

Alternatively, you may archive files by moving them off the primary system (eg ftp, scp ) to any place you feel they may be safely and conveniently stored. You (and the staff of whatever location at which you choose to archive your files) are responsible for the safety and integrity of your archived files.

1.2. Why archive files?

There are several possible reasons:
  • Since home directories have disk quotas (limits on how much disk space can be used) imposed, it makes sense to keep large files that aren't going to be used immediately elsewhere.
  • The contents of your scratch directory is not backed up, and may be purged after 30 days if space is running short (the contents of your home directory, and directories under it don't have a time limit, and are backed up nightly). If you have important files under your scratch directory, keeping copies of them elsewhere is strongly recomended.
  • Archiving inactive files keeps them available if needed, but makes it unlikely they will be accidentally altered or destroyed by your current work.

1.3. Do I have to archive files only to hsm.uky.edu?

No. It is a convenient resource maintained by UKCC. However you are free to archive your files wherever you wish. Just remember that files in the /scratch dirs are not backed up.
