1. ACCOUNTS

1.1. How do I obtain an account on hpc.uky.edu?

See the Accounts page.

1.2. What are the different types of accounts available on hpc.uky.edu and what are the differences between these types of accounts?

See the Accounts page.

1.3. What is a resource allocation and how are these allocations assigned when users apply for an account on hpc.uky.edu ?

A resource allocation is the total amount of a particular computing facility resource that is made available for use by a project during a one year period. When an applicant receives a resource allocation, that allocation is assigned in the following manner:

Each user of the HP Superdome complex will be assigned a single user ID (userid). Each user will also be assigned to a project. A project may have more than one userid assigned to it and any given user may belong to more than one project. Three different resources will be assigned to each user: CPU, local disk space, and mass storage space.

An allocation for CPU and mass storage space represents the total amount of that resource that may be used by all of the project's userids combined during the annual period for which the allocation was granted.

In contrast, local disk space will be allocated by userid rather than by project. Each userid will receive a default allocation for up to three userids per project. If a project has more than three userids, the allocation of local disk space will be reduced proportionately.

1.4. Is it possible for me to obtain more local disk space than the default allocation?

Yes, if there is a valid reason for requesting additional space. Requests for more local disk space should be made by email to the system administrator at help-hpc@uky.edu . More complicated arrangements, such as a shared disk area for a project, can be worked out when necessary.

Often, users will run out of disk space due to the accumulation of files that are no longer needed and/or files that are not being used for the particular job to be run. If you are running low on local disk space, the first thing to do is to delete files that are no longer needed. You can then move any large files that you want to keep but do not need to use for the current job to mass storage (see Archiving Files for more information on archiving files in mass storage.

1.5. Once I receive an allocation, how long before it expires?

Each project will be assigned a yearly resource allocation.

1.6. Whom can I contact if I have a question about my eligibility for an account on hpc.uky.edu ?

All questions regarding allocation eligibility should be sent by email to allocations-hpc@lsv.uky.edu.

1.7. Whom do I contact if I have a question about my user account or if I require other assistance through User Account Services ?

See the Accounts page.

1.8. May someone else use my account as long as they have my permission to do so?

No . The only person who may use a given account is the person to whom that account was granted. Permitting any other person to use your account may result in the suspension of your computing privileges.

1.9. I have been trying to login on hpc.uky.edu but my account is inaccessible?

If your account is inaccessible, contact User Account Services by email at accounts@lsv.uky.edu or by phone at (859) 257-1300 and ask if your account has been disabled or suspended for any reason.

If you find that your account has actually been suspended, then send email to help-hpc@uky.edu for additional information.

  • Entering too many failed passwords when attempting to login will automatically disable an account.
  • Permitting someone else to use your account (the only person who may use an account is the user to whom the account was granted)
  • Failing to abide by all relevant policies and procedures applicable to all users of the University of Kentucky Computing and Communications facilities (for detail information on these policies, see the UKy Information System Policies.
